I am directed by the Board of Trade to acknow-
ledge the receipt of your letter of the 16th June,
No. 90533, relative to the employment of German agents
in the Far East by British Insurance Companies, and
to state, for Sir E. Grey's information, that on
receipt of your letter of the 23rd June, No. 79239,
enclosing copy of a memorandum on this subject prepared
by the Commercial Attaché to His Majesty's Embassy at
Tokio, copies of the memorandum were sent to the Com-
panies represented at the Conference which took place
with the Board of Trade last lovember, with a state-
ment that His Majesty's Government shared the views
therein expressed, and that they trusted that the
Companies concerned would now part with the German
agents.
I am to add that as regards China, the matter has
of course been settled by the recent Proclamation pro-
hibiting trade with persons of enemy nationality in
China, Siam, Persia and Morocco.
